Fashion is more than just clothing. It reflects its time and society, it tells of taboos and departure, it can become a symbol of change and innovation. Especially in Berlin, fashion had always been an important topic, and so today Berlin street style is once again copied internationally. Trade fairs and runways show the latest trends in the capital, large exhibitions demonstrate the importance of fashion in art and in everyday life.

And of course you can find the hottest trends in Berlin’s shops. We have compiled the most important tips for all style-conscious, fashioniastas and fashion enthusiasts.

Tip 1: March Fashion Week

The Fashion Week is currently underway in Berlin, where the focus is on sustainability, innovation and the influence of subcultures. The creative ideas from Berlin are also presented digitally, so that they are noticed far beyond the city limits. In addition to the fashion shows, there will also be pop-up stores, networking events and fashion installations.
By the way: The Premium fair will return to Berlin with its shows in July.

Tip 2: Modebilder–Kunstkleider

How does fashion reflect social circumstances and personal taste? This question is explored in the exhibition Modebilder–Kunstkleider at the Berlinische Galerie, which shows photography, painting and fashion from 1900 to the present day. Fashion photographs paintings and drawings from the 20th century show the development of clothing in art. And of course you can marvel at dresses from the various epochs: from the reform dress around 1900 that finally replaced the corset to avant-garde designs in contemporary art.

Tip 3: How to Dior I Christian Dior and his successors

How to Dior. Christian Dior und seine Nachfolger*innen

Christian Dior‘s influence on fashion can hardly be overestimated. With his New Look, he created a new elegant silhouette after the Second World War. In the exhibition, you can marvel at Dior’s pioneering costumes and dresses and see the latest additions of Dior models. In addition to his early models, the exhibition shows for the first time designs by his successors Yves Saint Laurent, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré and John Galliano. In addition, there are works from the Macromedia University of Applied Sciences in Berlin.

Tip 4: Helmut Newton. Legacy

The major retrospective “Helmut Newton. Legacy” at the Museum of Photography shows Newton’s work and legacy. Among the 300 works are also his fashion photographs, for example of the sensational dresses of André Courrèges. Newton’s visions of fashion and his stagings of women’s bodies break taboos; they are still dazzling and disturbing today.

Tip 8: Hausvogteiplatz

Berlin wrote fashion history in the 1920s and early 1930s. Hausvogteiplatz in Mitte was the centre of Berlin’s ready-to-wear industry, where numerous companies and shops had set up shop. Under National Socialism, the mostly Jewish owners were expropriated and expelled or murdered. A sculpture on the square commemorates their fate. Tip 9: Fashion museum Meyenburg

The Fashion Museum is not in Berlin, but in Meyenburg in Brandenburg, where you can indulge in the fashion of times gone by. Dresses, shoes, bags and hats from the 1900s to the 1970s tell of historical and social developments and show how much body images and ideals of beauty have changed over time.
